How to Choose Art Prints That Don't Look Generic
Umami PrintsThere has never been more wall art available than there is today.
Open Etsy, Pinterest or Instagram and you'll find endless minimalist wall art, gallery walls, line drawings and motivational quotes competing for attention. Some of it is genuinely great. A lot of it starts to look strangely similar.
And that's probably the problem.
Most homes don't need more decoration. They need more personality.
Start with the feeling, not the colour
A lot of people choose art prints the same way they choose cushions.
Blue sofa? Buy a blue print. Green wall? Add something green above it.
Sometimes that works. Often it doesn't.
A better question is how you want the room to feel.
Calm. Warm. Quiet. Playful.
Good wall art doesn't just match a room. Whether it's in a living room, bedroom or hallway, it changes the mood of the space.
Be careful with artwork that tries too hard
Some pieces tell you everything immediately. Others leave a little space for interpretation.
We've always preferred the second kind.
The best art prints often come down to one strong idea, one interesting composition or one detail that stays in your head a little longer than expected.
Not every wall needs a motivational quote explaining how to feel.
Think about how it works from across the room
One question we come back to often is surprisingly simple:
Would this still work from the doorway?
The best prints usually do.
You notice them immediately, even before you see the details. Good composition tends to survive distance surprisingly well, which is why some pieces feel stronger on a wall than others.
Leave some walls empty
Not every wall needs filling.
Sometimes one larger piece creates more atmosphere than six smaller pieces of wall decor competing for attention.
Empty space isn't wasted space. It's part of the composition too.
Don't try to match everything perfectly
Some of the nicest interiors have a little tension in them.
A modern room with a vintage poster. A quiet room with one louder piece. Something unexpected often feels more personal than something perfectly coordinated.
Trying to match every colour and every material usually leads to rooms that feel carefully decorated but strangely forgettable.
Buy fewer things
This might sound strange coming from a print shop, but we'd almost always choose one piece that you genuinely love over five that simply fill a space.
Trends move quickly. You'll probably live with your walls for much longer.
The best modern wall art tends to survive trends because it wasn't chasing them in the first place.
A simple test
If you're unsure about an art print, ask yourself one question:
Would I still want this on my wall in five years?
If the answer is yes, you're probably looking at something worth keeping around.
Trends come and go. The prints that stay on the wall are usually the ones that felt right from the beginning.
